MLB Draft Rounds 2-5 Recap

With Matt Vasgersian taking the reins behind the podium, rounds 2-5 were completed finalizing the 2020 MLB draft. The draft being shortened will cause mayhem throughout the MLB very soon with the agreement stating that teams can sign an unlimited amount of undrafted free agents. Until then, here are my takeaways from this year’s draft, more specifically rounds 2-5.

Round 2 Pick #40  Miami Marlins – Daxton Fulton, LHP / Mustang HS – This was the first pick with a player who is currently injured. Fulton had an elbow injury and needed the ole TJ. Fulton was said to have the best breaking stuff in this draft class, so potentially worth the risk for the fish.

Round 2 Pick #50 Texas Rangers – Evan Carter OF/ Elizabethton HS – Carter is a two-way player that is necessary in today’s game. He is also a RHP that throws high 80s at the age of 17. I can’t tell you much about this kid because he wasn’t ranked in MLB.com’s Top 200 or even Top 500 in Baseball America’s prospect list.

Round 2 Pick #60 Los Angeles Dodgers – Landon Knack RHP/ East Tennessee State – In the small sample size of the spring season, in four starts Knack had 51 strikeouts and 1 walk in 25 innings pitched. Dodgers normally have a pretty good eye when drafting pitchers but this was too easy. Child’s play.

Round 3 Pick #74 Baltimore Orioles – Anthony Servideo SS / Ole Miss – Most electric player in the NCAA hands down. My personal favorite draft pick just because of the pure swagger this guy has. He’s blown up social media for a while now with his laid back attitude, bleached flow, and hall of fame levels of celebrations. Baseball wise, he’s silky smooth defensively and has a player comp to Brandon Crawford and Dansby Swanson. On offense, he’s been Ole Miss’s lead off guy and through 17 games in 2020, he was batting .390 and had the 2nd most walks in the 2020 NCAA season.

Round 3 Pick #89 Boston Red Sox – Blaze Jordan 3B / DeSoto Central HS – Finally folks, the Blaze watch is officially over and I couldn’t be any more excited. For beginners, Blaze Jordan has been a YouTube sensation since his early teen’s. There’s video of him hitting 500+ ft homers at the age of 13. The Red Sox definitely made up for their questionable first round pick with the snagging of Jordan while they had the chance. General consensus, Blaze Jordan has a baller name and can hit BOMBS. What more do you want?

Round 3 Pick #101 Houston Astros – Tyler Brown RHP / Vanderbilt – A true closer. In 2019 Brown set a Vanderbilt single season record of 17 saves. You know what you’re going to get with this pick. He’s not a failed starter that you throw to the bullpen after a few poor performances, he’s a consistent relief pitcher that will produce.

Round 4 Pick #116 Philadelphia Phillies – Carson Ragsdale RHP / South Florida – Tall guy. He stands at 6’8” but is more of a control pitcher which is fine and all, but when you’re one of the tallest players in the draft I’m expecting some gas and not another pitcher like Chris Young. Give me the heat.

Round 4 Pick #117 Chicago Cubs – Luke Little LHP / San Jacinto JC – Tall guy, BUT throws HEAT. When I say heat I mean, he’s hucking 105 mph. Luke — not so little — Little, is a fire throwing JUCO stud. Before I get ahead of myself, he’s never thrown 105 in a game and typically stays around 96 mph, but hitting 105 mph and going viral in the baseball realm of social media has to give you the confidence to do that in a game.

Round 5 Pick #136 Toronto Blue Jays – Zach Britton OF/ Louisville – Impossible to Google this guy for obvious reasons related to another AL East guy, but before the pandemic ended things, Britton led all of NCAA D1 in doubles (11). Solid pick, mainly chose to write about him because of the comical idea of Zach Britton facing Zack Britton in a regular season exhibition.

UDFA sh*t show coming next.
